Essex County

Essex County, Massachusetts

Situated in the northeastern corner of Massachusetts, Essex County spans over 800 square miles, with nearly half comprised of water. Reflecting New England’s rich heritage, the county was established on May 10, 1643, by the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which divided the area into four “sheires.” Named after its English counterpart, Essex County initially included Salem, Lynn, Wenham, Ipswich, Rowley, Newbury, Gloucester, and Andover. In 1680, Haverhill and Salisbury, located north of the Merrimack River, were added. Over the years, the original settlements were subdivided, shaping the modern makeup of the county. Notably, Essex County is also linked to the origin of the term “gerrymandering,” thanks to Elbridge Gerry of Marblehead, who redistricted the area in 1812 into a shape resembling a salamander.

As of the 2010 Census, Essex County’s population totaled 743,159. Close to Boston, Essex County is part of the “Greater Boston” area, effectively doubling the region’s population. Recognized for its rich history, the county was designated as the “Essex National Heritage Area” by the National Park Service.

Coleman & MacDonald Law Office in Essex County, Massachusetts

The team at Coleman & MacDonald Law Office is proud to serve our Essex County community with their estate planning needs. Estate planning is more than deciding the fate of your assets; it involves protecting and growing them while you’re alive and ensuring they support your loved ones after you’re gone. Our aim is to help you create a comprehensive plan that achieves all these goals.

A successful estate plan requires a robust foundation, but it must also evolve over time. The plan suitable for you when you’re young and single won’t suffice as your life changes. Regular reviews and updates ensure your estate plan aligns with your current life circumstances. Initially, a Last Will and Testament might suffice, but as you marry or start a family, your plan may need a trust for your children’s inheritance and incapacity planning. As your estate grows, tax avoidance and asset protection become essential. Approaching your “Golden Years,” you’ll want to integrate retirement and Medicaid planning, as well as funeral and burial arrangements to honor your final wishes.
